A double-breasted coat with peak lapels, four fastening buttons out of six, in a herringbone cloth.

The double-breasted coat is ambivalent, and that is where its interest lies. It carries a connotation of greater sophistication, inherited from its prominence in military dress; at the same time it is the most utilitarian of overcoats, since it was the double thickness of cloth across the front that led the world’s armies and navies to make it their standard.

In practice it is warmer and heavier than a single-breasted coat, and less easily worn open. The peak lapel, introduced shortly after the notch lapel as a detail of evening dress and military ceremony, gives it the sophistication that goes with this front.
