The peacoat comes from the European navies of the 18th century, and particularly from the British Royal Navy. It had to keep the wearer warm and protected in hard conditions at sea: its whole design follows from that.
It is recognisable by its short cut, its double-breasted front and its wide, high collar, which protects the neck from cold and weather.
The double-breasted front is not a stylistic flourish here: it is the double thickness of cloth across the front that keeps out the cold, and that is precisely what led the world’s navies to make it their standard. Our model is built with patch pockets, franker and more relaxed than the flap pockets of a formal overcoat.
Short and sturdy, it is worn as easily over jeans as over flannel trousers and a jumper.
